Corporate Sustainability: Much Used but Rarely Understood
by Guest Author

November 2012
Corporate sustainability is a term much used but inconsistently understood. To some, it conjures notions of corporate philanthropy, charitable giving or public relations. To others, it is a mandate whereby companies carefully operate within legal requirements and prevailing social norms. Increasingly, however, it is being seen as a new core business model that sustains a company’s success over time and is the hallmark of its overall business health.

Changes in LEED Standards Receive Negative Feedback

The General Services Administration (GSA) is looking at adopting new, stricter standards for their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, a system that gives businesses rewards for adhering to green practices in building design. Most people who want to build a world with better environmental standards would see this as a logical step forward, making progress towards a cleaner world. Unfortunately, certain industries, such as those that sell plastics, vinyl and chemical products are attempting to block the new set of standards.

State of the Union: A Northwest Perspective
by Evan Scandling
-
January 2012
After following the State of the Union speech earlier this week, participating in the Twitter-based #ecoSOTU conversation, and reading the multitudes of post-SOTU analyses by energy and cleantech backers, I’m fairly convinced the overall feeling is that while Mr. Obama likes clean energy, he loves natural gas.
So be it. Focusing on the positives though – at least the President strongly encouraged the passing of legislation for energy efficiency in manufacturing, promoted the need for the renewal of clean energy tax credits and suggested to Congress that a clean energy standard be established to drive the market.
A few of my favorite recaps and breakdowns of the speech – from a national perspective – came from the likes of always-insightful Climate Progress, Seattle-based and globally-respected Grist, and TIME Magazine’s Ecocentric blog.
All great coverage, but what does Mr. Obama’s energy agenda mean for the Northwest?
